Tobar an Léinn is a five-teacher mainstream Catholic primary school under the patronage of the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin. Pupils are enrolled from a wide rural catchment area between the towns of Portlaoise, Mountrath and Abbeyleix.

Environmentally friendly features of the school include our passive-solar design, grass roof, insulation and our rain water harvesting system. The passive-solar design of the school makes the most of the natural sunlight and heat. There are large windows in all the classrooms and light also shines in through windows in the roof of the lobby and hall. The sloping grass roof acts as an insulator to keep the building warm. It also provides a home for many insects. The school building itself is also insulated with recycled paper. Our school also has a rain water harvesting system whereby rain water is piped to the toilets for flushing to save our water consumption.
