Tobar an Léinn is a small 6 teacher primary school located in the village of Raheen, Co. Laois, Ireland.
For this experiment our aim was to layer waters of different densities on top of each other to create a rainbow effect. Firstly, we added different amounts of sugar to 3 plastic cups, and then stirred in some food colouring. We learned that the more sugar that is added to water, the more dense it becomes.
Next, we used droppers to slowly add the different coloured water to some measuring cylinders. The most dense water, the yellow, stayed on the bottom. The red water floated on top of the yellow water. We were careful to add it to the measuring cylinder very slowly with the droppers! Lastly, we added the clear water, which had no added sugar. That water floated on top because it was the least dense. We were delighted that our experiment worked and created such a cool effect. We will try it again soon, and add more layers of different colours and densities.
