Laois Camogie Trials and Leinster Trials representatives

Our school nominated two of our 6th class girls for the Laois Cumann na mBunscol Laois Trials.  To say we were thrilled was an understatement when both girls were selected on the Laois panel.  They went on and played in the Leinster Blitz day held in COE , Portlaoise recently.  Well done to both girls. It was a proud day for them and their families.  The first of many days out in a Laois jersey.

3rd and 4th Class in house league

Our committee put together teams for 3rd and 4th class to play an in house league.  It was a very simple format and we await the shield and cup finals to be held soon.  The committee managed teams, set up pitches and even refereed games. Well done.

Joe McDonagh Finals

Tobar an Léinn whole school went all out to support Laois Senior hurlers in the Joe McDonagh Final against Kildare.  It was extra special having James Keyes who is a past pupil of Tobar an Léinn line out in Croke Park. All the children were asked to wear their blue and white colours to show support for the team. They did not disappoint.

Hurling and Camogie - Cumann na mBunscol

Cian continued his coaching at the start of the new year and attended all the schools games.  He gave great guidance along the way.  Ms. Griffin took some extra Fridays sessions also. This focus of the new year always turns to the Hurling and Camogie Cumann na mBunscol games.  The boys competed in the Roinn 3 group with stiff opposition like Ballyadams, Ballylinan, Timahoe, Stradbally and Portlaoise.   The format changed this year, with 2 blitz days out.  Stradbally hosted one and Tobar an Léinn hosted the other.  Timahoe topped the group with Tobar an Léinn advancing to the shield final against the Heath.  This was a tremendous achievement as the boys haven't been in a final for quite some time. Well done boys, you did us proud!

The girls competed in Roinn 2.  They were joined by Ratheniska, Emo, Scoil Bhríde, Rathdowney, Gaelscoil, Phortlaoise and Mountmellick. They had some extremely tough games and in the group stages Scoil Bhríde proved too strong for them.  The girls advanced to the Shield Final against Portarlington.  The game was so closely contested but with unbelievable perseverance and superb individual performances the girls in the end claimed victory.  It was a very exciting outing in O'Moore Park. It was topped off with a trip to Supermacs.  A special words of thanks to Colt GAA for their kind sponsorship.

Helmet Scheme - Laois GAA

Every year before we start our Cumann na mBunscol Hurling competition we avail of the helmet scheme with Laois GAA.  This makes it easier for parents to purchase helmets through the school.  We always get a great up take through this scheme and gives a greater opportunity for more to participate in our hurling sessions.

Mighty McCarthy

We had formed a sub committee alongside our Active Schools committee to help promote hurling within the school community.  At our meeting we decided to involve the junior end of the school more.  We came up with the idea of 'Mighty McCarthy'.  We created a story about him and how he is steeped in GAA hurling tradition.  We attached his story and what his mission is to the inside of a hardback pad.  We also included the main skills Mighty Mc Carthy likes to practice.  We hoped that children and their families would together practice their skills and learn to love and enjoy the game of hurling and camogie more. Plus have fun!!

Colt Shanahoe- Cian Moffitt Hurling Coach

We are very fortunate over the years to have access to the fabulous Colt GAA grounds.  This year we have Cian Moffitt coaching the whole school the skills of hurling thanks to Colt Shanahoe GAA Club.  Everyone looks forward to Tuesdays in school. Thank you Cian for making it very enjoyable for all.

Laois Coaching & Games 3rd & 4th class Football and Hulring festival blitz in Laois COE.

3rd and 4th class boys and girls mixed teams played  festival of football in the COE on Tuesday November 26th, 2024.  It was an excellent opportunity for the children to play against other schools.  The same set of children were invited into the COE again for a festival of hurling in December. These are fantastic opportunities for younger classes before they venture towards Cumann na mBunscol teams.

Cumann na mBunscol

Tobar an Léinn entered both a girls and a boys team into the Football Cumann na mBunscol competition 2024.  September began fast and furious with games each week. In Roinn 3, the boys competed against Timahoe, Killadooley, Cullohill, Gaelscoil Phortlaoise and Scoil Bhríde also.  They did very well but unfortunately did not progress to any finals.

The girls were in Roinn 3 also. The In the groups stages there were very close games against Timahoe, Ballyroan, Cullohill and Scoil Bhríde Portlaoise. They very fortunate to reach yet another final with a talented group of players.  The whole school lined out to cheer the girls on. They played in very cold conditions in O'Moore Park in November but that didn't deter their mission. They were victorious on the day against Clonaslee.  There was a great display of kick outs, team runs, kick passing, scoring and defending. Below is a snippet of the year we had together. Tobar an Léinn Abú!
