Tobar an Léinn had a very exciting Active Schools Week in April. Our committee were busy plotting what we should do before our Easter break. We have a lot of people to thank for giving up their time to help the children become more active for the week. Firstly, thanks to our special guest, laois Ladies Footballer and All Star Goalkeeper Caoimh Dollard who launched our week. We were all very excited to listen to Caoimh speak about her career as a soldier and how important sport is to her in keeping fit and staying healthy. A huge thanks to Neil and Colin from TMG Portlaoise for introducing the children to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Charlotte Delaney for her circuit training, our wonderful committee for setting up a brilliant obstacle course and finally to Loretta Kirwan for her yoga and mindfulness session to finish our week.
Monday - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Our Active Schools Committee decided we’d like to introduce a new sport. Ms. Griffin organised two gentlemen to attend and they were brilliant. Colin and Neil from TMG Portlaoise shared their expertise in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. We learned a great deal about self-defence and the theory behind the sport. Colin explained that Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend himself against a larger adversary by using proper technique. So they demonstrated for us below.......
Then they put the children through their paces. From bear, gorilla and crab crawls to more defensive techniques, the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Tuesday - Circuit Training
Charlotte Delaney challenged the children with some circuit training. Again the children loved the different style of physical activity and were exhausted after the session. They ran swiftly through ladders and hopped their way over hurdles.....
Wednesday - Obstacle Course
We designed an obstacle course on our school yard. Our active schools committee were superb in setting up the obstacle course with the help of Ms. Griffin and Ms. Campion. They even tested it out and made some final adjustments before we began. Our committee were very efficient as they set up, put away and set up the course over and over again throughout the day. They also explained to all the other classes how they wanted everyone to enjoy the course and it wasn’t about winning. Well done committee. Super work!
Thursday - Gymnastics
Thursday was the beginning of a block of gymnastics. More pictures to follow.
As 1st to 6th got a taste of gymnastics, Junior and Senior Infants went on a walk/scavenger hunt down towards Tynan's Farm. We dressed in our hi-vis and walked in pairs with our clipboards. It was a fabulous day and gave us perfect opportunity to listen, smell, hear and see the countryside around Raheen.
These pictures are just an example of the intense workout the children endure during gymnastic lessons. Well done Sonya!!
Friday - Yoga and Mindfulness
Loretta Kirwan based in Borris In Ossory kindly gave her time and shared her expertise in kids yoga. Throughout the day she catered for infants up to seniors adjusting levels of participation to suit all. Included in the sessions were breath awareness exercises for calmness, practice of increased focus to improve concentration, movement to improve flexibility and posture and an introduction to mindfulness using guided imagery meditation. It was such a success for all as Yoga is non competitive, there are no winners!! Tobar an Léinn while working out, loved the nice relaxing ending to a very active week. Namaste Loretta.
